Becoming a Maine Medical Cannabis Patient
Maine removed its list of qualifying conditions from the medical cannabis program in 2018 — any condition a licensed medical provider is willing to certify now qualifies. Here's how registration works.
1. Get certified by a licensed provider
A Maine-licensed physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant registered with the state's certification system can issue a printed patient certification. That certification is itself valid at a Maine dispensary — a separate state card isn't required to get started.
2. A state registry card is optional
Patients may also apply to Maine's Office of Cannabis Policy for an official Registry Identification Card, but it isn't mandatory. A provider's printed certification works on its own.
3. Bring ID when you visit
Registered patients must be 21 or older and bring their certification (or registry card) along with a valid government-issued photo ID. Visiting patients with a valid medical cannabis card from another state can generally be served here as well.
